What’s Next for Trump’s Conviction? Let's Explore Some Options
Manhattan, New York, USAWed Nov 13 2024
So, Donald Trump won the election, and now a judge in New York has a big decision to make. Should he sentence Trump right away, even though he's about to become president? Or should he wait until Trump leaves office? There are a few paths the judge could take.
First, he could just wait until Trump's term ends in 2029. That would keep the conviction but not disrupt Trump's presidency. But remember, Trump would be 82 by then!
Another option is for the judge to grant Trump immunity. A recent Supreme Court decision said former presidents can't be prosecuted for official acts. Trump's lawyers say this means the case should be thrown out. Prosecutors disagree.
The judge could also wait for a federal court to rule on Trump's appeal. This might take a while, and Trump's team could bring up new arguments once he's in the White House.
Or, the judge could just dismiss the case right away. No sentencing, no punishment. Trump's lawyers say this is the only fair way to handle it.
Finally, the judge could go ahead with sentencing. This could be complicated, though. The charges carry different punishments, from fines to up to four years in prison. But experts say a prison sentence might not happen, and even if it did, it could be delayed or suspended.
