WhatsApp's New AI Chat Summaries: A Quick Look
USAThu Jun 26 2025
WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that uses AI to summarize private messages. This tool, powered by Meta AI, creates a bullet-point list of key points from unread chats. To use it, simply tap the button that usually shows all unread messages, and the AI will generate a summary instead.
This feature is currently available in English in the US, with plans to expand to more countries and languages later this year. Meta assures users that their messages are protected using Private Processing technology, which prevents the company and third parties from accessing the content.
Users have control over this feature. It is optional and turned off by default. Additionally, WhatsApp offers an “Advanced Privacy” setting that allows users to disable AI features in group chats. However, the accuracy of these AI-generated summaries remains uncertain, as similar features from other companies have faced issues with precision.
Meta claims that the app’s Private Processing creates a secure cloud environment, keeping user interactions with the AI model private. This means neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the summaries, and other group chat members cannot access them either.
While this new feature offers convenience, it raises questions about reliability and privacy. Users should consider whether they trust the AI to accurately summarize their messages and protect their data.
