When Online Tips Lead to Legal Trouble in Rochester
Rochester, MN, USATue Apr 28 2026
A Rochester man avoided prison time after a judge threw out most of the evidence in a case involving suspicious online activity. The investigation started when police received a tip that he was trying to meet minors online. Instead of charging him directly with child exploitation, authorities built a case around his involvement in juvenile prostitution.
The man, who has prior legal troubles, got pulled over for driving with a suspended license. During questioning, police searched his home and found over a hundred files containing images and videos of child sexual abuse. Some showed adults assaulting young boys. Additional online messages suggested he had paid a teenager for sex and exchanged explicit photos.
His charges included spreading child pornography and possessing illegal material, but prosecutors dropped those after a key ruling. A judge decided the police didn’t have enough evidence to justify searching his home in the first place. Without a strong basis for the search, many of the files seized couldn’t be used. The only charge that stuck was the prostitution-related offense, leading to five years of probation.
The case raises questions about how law enforcement handles internet tips and when searches become legally questionable. It also shows how plea deals can reshape serious charges into lesser outcomes.
