When Politics and Military Clash: A Senator's Stand
USAWed Nov 26 2025
Senator Mark Kelly, a former Navy pilot, recently found himself in a heated debate with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Kelly didn't hold back, calling Hegseth "totally unqualified" and suggesting he's just trying to please the president. This all started when Kelly and other Democrats made a video for troops, reminding them they can refuse illegal orders.
The Defense Department wasn't happy. They announced a review of Kelly, citing "serious allegations of misconduct. " Kelly, however, sees this as an attempt to silence him. He told Jimmy Kimmel that the president's reaction is a classic authoritarian move, trying to suppress speech and demand loyalty.
Kelly also shared a bizarre moment when a staffer interrupted a briefing to say the president was "calling for his execution. " It turned out to be a misunderstanding, but it shows how tense things have gotten.
Hegseth didn't stay quiet either. He criticized Kelly's military medals and called the video a "politically-motivated influence operation. " He even suggested Kelly could face a uniform inspection if recalled to active duty.
Kelly served 25 years in the Navy and at NASA. He believes the military has clear procedures for handling unlawful orders and doesn't need political interference. He warns that this situation could set a dangerous precedent for democracy.
