When Soldiers Cross the Line

Debel, southern LebanonWed Apr 22 2026
Two Israeli soldiers found themselves in hot water after a disturbing photo surfaced online. The image showed one soldier attacking a crucifix with an axe while another snapped a picture. The act happened in a small village in southern Lebanon where Christians still live despite the ongoing conflict nearby. The military moved fast to respond. The soldiers involved were pulled from frontline duty and slapped with 30 days in detention as punishment. Six others stood by but didn’t stop the act. The military called it a serious breach, stressing that damaging religious symbols goes against their values. Officials even promised to replace the statue as a gesture to the local community.
But this kind of punishment doesn’t happen often in the Israeli military. Rights groups say most cases of misconduct don’t get properly addressed. For example, nearly 9 out of 10 complaints about soldiers’ behavior in Gaza and the West Bank go unresolved. The photo was taken in Debel, a village where Christians have stayed despite the fighting. Israel’s military campaign in the area started after attacks by Hezbollah. Even though a ceasefire deal was reached, villages in southern Lebanon still face Israeli control. Some question whether these actions are making things worse. Lebanese leaders worry that targeting certain groups could stir up more tension. The military says it’s only going after Hezbollah’s infrastructure, but the damage to the crucifix raises bigger questions about respect and discipline in war.
