The team then tested what this grinding does to a common hormone, 17β-estradiol, that sticks to tire bits in water. When the bits were fresh, the hormone stayed mostly locked inside. After grinding, the hormone broke free faster, especially in fluids that mimic what a fish stomach digests. The smaller the bits, the shorter the trip the hormone had to travel to escape. This could mean fish swallowing these tiny bits get bigger doses of the hormone than anyone expected.
Goldfish in the lab showed clear changes. Their bodies absorbed the hormone earlier but held onto it longer before breaking it down. The fish also produced more of a protein that signals estrogen effects. The body clock of this response shifted, so instead of rising and falling smoothly, the signal spiked later and stayed up longer. It’s as if the fish’s hormone alarm rang at the wrong time and kept ringing.
