Who Won the Election Ad Battle? A Closer Look
USATue Oct 29 2024
Political ads are everywhere these days. But who’s really winning the ad war? We dug into data from 3. 7 million TV ads to find out. Democrats spent a whopping $213 million more than Republicans on TV ads between August and October. That’s a lot of money! They also got 9. 9 billion more ad views nationwide. In the presidential race, Kamala Harris outpaced Donald Trump in ad views by a big margin. She even led in five of the seven swing states. But will all this advertising pay off? Let's break it down.
In the Senate races, Democrats struggled in most close races, with Republicans only leading in three. But in the House races, Democrats had the most ad views in all 25 tossup races. That's good news for them. Ads can sway votes, but not as much as you might think. A study found that House candidates who aired 100 more ads than their opponent only added about 0. 08 percentage points to their final vote margins. That’s not much, but it could still make a difference in a close election.
Abortion rights were a big topic in Democratic ads. They spent more on this issue than any other in 42 congressional races. If this issue gets voters to the polls, it could help Harris and Democrats. But immigration is also a big deal. Republicans spent a lot on ads linking immigration and crime. Voters care about both issues, so it’s hard to say which will have the biggest impact.
Just because you spend more on ads doesn’t mean you’ll win. Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 even though she aired more ads than Trump. So, Democrats might need to rethink their strategy if they don’t win next week. Ads matter, but they’re not the only thing that decides elections.
