Who's In Charge? IRS Commissioner Shake-Up
Washington, D.C., USASat Apr 19 2025
The IRS is in the middle of a big shake-up. Gary Shapley, who was temporarily in charge, is out. This happened after a disagreement between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Elon Musk. The Treasury Department has chosen Michael Faulkender to take over as the new acting head of the IRS. Bessent believes Faulkender is the right person to restore trust in the IRS. Shapley, who has a background in investigating tax evasion, will still be an advisor to Bessent.
Shapley's promotion to lead the IRS was supported by Senator Chuck Grassley. Before this, Shapley had been working on the Hunter Biden tax evasion case and had spoken out about the government's handling of it. He replaced Melanie Krause, who resigned over a data-sharing agreement with the Department of Homeland Security. This agreement allows immigration authorities to check personal information against tax records. Krause had taken over from Douglas O’Donnell, who retired amid concerns about the Department of Government Efficiency's access to taxpayer data.
There have been signs of tension between Bessent and Musk. Musk recently shared a post criticizing Bessent on his social media platform. This comes after Trump's cost-cutting efforts at the IRS have caused some turmoil. There have been leadership changes and staff cuts. One employee described the agency as going through a "rapid and disturbing shift" since Trump's inauguration. Trump has appointed Billy Long to lead the IRS permanently, but Long has not yet had a confirmation hearing.
The IRS has seen a lot of changes recently. From leadership shifts to staff reductions, the agency is undergoing significant transformations. These changes raise questions about the future of the IRS and how it will operate under new leadership. The recent shake-up highlights the ongoing tensions and disagreements within the government. It remains to be seen how these changes will affect the IRS and its operations.
