Why African Men Avoid Going to the Doctor

Sat Feb 01 2025
Men in Africa often steer clear of healthcare services, leaving a big gap in our understanding of their health needs. This avoidance means we don't know much about their habits and health issues. We need to figure out how masculinity might be a big reason why men avoid healthcare. Let’s take a look at the general argument. Have men in particular countries or regions been told in various ways that they should be "strong "? Do they get this message from the community or media or family? What is the first media they are exposed to? What do they think they are supposed to be strong about? Do they think they have to be strong about their health? Are they then told by popular culture and community that they can\'t be strong when being sick? If their idea of masculinity does keep men from seeking the care they need, it could be a big problem. Men today, do not live in a timeless vacuum. Older men may come with 20th century ideas. Might their idea of masculinity be from older times? Might this affect their health? There were cultural stereotypes and gender rolesthat may have been more widely accepted back then. There are but not as many, today. How does this impact their health. What health is impacted? Communicable diseases spread easily. These diseases spread like wildfire. Noncommunicable diseases don't spread person to person, but both can cause serious issues. We need to figure out how men view and deal with all these diseases andhow sexism is impacting their health. Mental health is another big concern. Issues such as depression and substance abuse can cause serious problems. These are a big clouds in life and a heavy burden. These problems might be linked to life experiences. There might be more negative impacts. Their mental health may be ignored along with their physical health. Who knows why? What does this mean for men with physical disabilities? How can we help? For men who are struggling with life events and feeling the stress of it all, must we wait to help? We need to give support to men. What cultural beliefs and backgrounds might be stopping men of all ages accessing care they need? What about older men. Are they facing unique issues. We need to know more about how these factors affect men's health and well-being. Old and young, African men deserve better for their health.
