Why AI leaders need brain skills more than just emotional skills

Thu May 07 2026
Leaders climbing the corporate ladder often focus on hard skills early on. But as they reach higher positions, their job shifts toward managing people—especially emotions. Many companies push emotional intelligence (EQ) training to help with this. Yet this approach misses two big problems. First, many leaders resist EQ because it seems soft or unnatural to them. Brain science shows that goal-driven people and emotion-focused people use different brain networks. A study found only 5% of leaders balance both well. Most excel at goals, not emotions. Telling them to “feel more” feels like asking them to abandon their strengths. For these leaders, the word “emotions” can even trigger stress.
EQ isn’t enough for the AI age. AI is changing how work gets done. Leaders now need something broader: metacognition—thinking about how they think. Research suggests learning about the brain improves this skill. Instead of just EQ, leaders need “neurointelligence” (NQ): understanding how the brain works. This goes beyond emotions. It includes knowing cognitive limits, spotting AI-generated fluff, and recognizing unconscious biases. Leaders should also learn what truly drives motivation—not just feelings—and build resilience to think clearly under pressure. These skills help them make better decisions and lead teams effectively in a fast-changing world. Some experts agree. McKinsey predicts that “brain health” will shape top organizations by 2026. Learning about your brain doesn’t just boost function. It also strengthens resilience against stress. In a world where AI handles data, leaders must focus on human thinking—creativity, judgment, and insight. EQ alone won’t cut it.
