You might be surprised to learn that many Americans are eating less meat these days. A recent survey found that nearly 70% of people are cutting back on red meat, and about 64% are eating less processed meat. Why? The main reason people gave was that meat is just too expensive. Health concerns also played a big role, with 64% mentioning that as a reason to reduce meat intake. Interestingly, environmental messages about the impact of meat on the planet aren’t making much of a difference. Scientists at Rutgers University in New Jersey found that people aren't really changing their diets because of the environmental impact. They think that focusing on health benefits and affordability might be more effective in getting people to eat less meat.
Some groups are more affected by the high cost of meat than others. People earning between $25, 000 to $49, 999 a year, women, Black people, and high school graduates are particularly sensitive to the price. Beef, for instance, was 4. 2% more expensive in September this year compared to last year, and it's expected to go even higher. Poultry prices also jumped by 6. 3%. Older people and women are more likely to consider environmental sustainability and health when buying meat. Most people reported eating red meat between one to four times a week, with similar patterns for processed meats and poultry. Only 5% of people follow a vegetarian, vegan, or plant-based diet, and 14% eat meat five or more times a week. The study shows that making sustainability a priority for consumers is a challenge. Experts suggest that a mix of approaches, like emphasizing health, taste, and affordability, might be needed to really change eating habits. The study was published in the journal Appetite.
