Cancer rates are changing in the United States. Women and younger people are now getting cancer more often than before. The American Cancer Society (ACS) found that women under 50 are 82% more likely to get cancer than men. This is a big increase from 2002, when the difference was only 51%. Breast and thyroid cancers are the main reasons for this change, affecting women under 50 the most. Men under 50 are seeing fewer cases of cancers like melanoma and prostate cancer. Lifestyle changes might be causing this trend. Women are having children later or not at all, missing out on the protection that pregnancy and breastfeeding give against breast cancer. Also, more women are drinking alcohol, which can increase the risk of breast cancer.
Lung cancer is another problem. Women under 65 are now getting lung cancer more often than men. This is because women started smoking later and may still be catching up on quitting. Cervical cancer is also on the rise among women aged 30 to 44. This could be because of vaccine hesitancy and not getting regular pap smears. The obesity crisis in the U. S. is also a factor. Women are more likely to be obese than men, and young people are more likely to be overweight than their parents and grandparents. Lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of many cancers. Better screening guidelines and technology are helping to find cancers earlier, like breast and thyroid cancers. Overall, cancer survival rates are improving, but some types of cancer are still increasing.
