In a recent hearing, a lawmaker shifted the focus away from Minnesota's fraud problems. Instead, she brought up crimes by "White men" and "American citizens. " This happened while the state's governor, Tim Walz, announced he wouldn't run again. New reports show Minnesota might have lost $9 billion due to fraud under his watch. Some Democrats didn't ask about the fraud. They talked about other things, like the Trump administration and January 6. Rep. Emily Randall, D-Wash. , asked about crimes by White men. She said they commit 57% of sexual assaults. She also mentioned that 41% of murder suspects in 2023 were White.
Randall said we should look at ourselves, not just others. She pointed out that many January 6 defendants were convicted of more crimes. She also said most domestic extremism suspects are men. But is this the right time to talk about this? Minnesota has big fraud problems. Investigators found schemes involving fake daycare centers and medical providers. They stole millions meant for needy kids, autistic children, and low-income Americans. Chairman James Comer, R-Ky. , said many fraudsters are from Minnesota's Somali community. He said they took money meant for vulnerable people. So, why are we not talking about the real issues? Why shift the focus away from fraud? It's important to address all crimes, but we should also focus on the problems right in front of us.
