Why Aren't All Kids Getting the Special Education They Need?
Dover, N.H., USAMon Nov 25 2024
Did you know that some kids aren't getting the special education they really need? As someone who used to work in a middle school, I saw this firsthand. Some parents knew the law and could argue for better services, while others couldn't. This isn't fair, is it?
A recent article talked about fights between families and schools over sending kids to different districts. But it didn't mention that the government isn't giving enough money for this. The law says they should give 40% of what they spend on other kids, but they only give 13%! That's why some kids aren't getting the help they need.
All kids should have the right supports to succeed, whether that's going to a different school or getting help in the classroom. But special-ed kids have another problem: they can feel lonely and left out. They might not make friends or join sports teams if they're always in separate classes.
It's not just about learning, right? Kids should have fun and make friends too. But many parents don't know how to help their kids. They're busy, and schools can't teach them everything. That's where technology can step in. AI tools could help parents understand what their kids need and how to get it.
We still have a long way to go, but it's great that some newspapers are shining a light on this issue. It's important for all kids to get the help they need to succeed.
