Stock markets around the world had a mixed day on Wednesday. This happened after U. S. stocks lost some of their recent gains, especially in tech and energy companies. Britain reported that its inflation rate dropped to 1. 7% in September, the lowest in over three years. This good news boosted the FTSE 100 index by 0. 6%. It also makes people think the Bank of England might cut interest rates soon.
Meanwhile, other European markets didn't do as well. The CAC 40 in Paris lost 0. 6%, and Germany's DAX dropped 0. 4%. In the U. S. , stock futures for the S&P 500 were flat, but the Dow Jones futures were down slightly.
In Asia, things were looking tough. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell by 1. 8% because tech stocks took a hit. A Dutch company that makes computer chip equipment, ASML, warned that demand for semiconductors outside of artificial intelligence (AI) is taking longer to bounce back. This made investors nervous. Some countries, like the U. S. , are thinking about putting new rules on exporting chips because of national security concerns.
Markets in Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, and India also saw losses. Only Hong Kong and Shanghai had small gains. The central banks of the Philippines and Thailand cut their interest rates to help their economies. Thailand’s SET index rose 1. 3% after their rate cut.
On Tuesday, U. S. stock markets pulled back after setting new records the day before. This was mostly because oil prices dropped sharply. A barrel of Brent crude oil fell below $75 after being over $80 last week. This happened because China’s economy isn’t growing fast, which makes people worry less oil will be needed.
Oil prices continued to drop on Wednesday, with U. S. crude oil at $70. 46 per barrel and Brent crude at $74. 14 per barrel. The dollar also got stronger against the Japanese yen and the euro.
