Why Did Nintendo Go Simple with the Switch 2 Name?
Sat Jan 18 2025
Nintendo has finally unveiled its new console, and it's called the Switch 2. You might be thinking, "That's it? " Well, experts say this straightforward name makes a lot of sense. Dr. Serkan Toto from Kantan Games thinks it's a smart move. He says, "Thank goodness Nintendo didn't try to get creative with the name. " Nintendo is known for unique console names like the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS XL. But this time, they played it safe and chose a simple, clear name.
George Jijiashvili from Omdia Research agrees. He says, "Keep it simple, stupid! " He points out that the PlayStation has been using this strategy for years, and it works. A name like "Super Nintendo Switch" might be fun for fans, but it could confuse consumers. Remember the Wii U? Many people thought it was an accessory for the Wii.
Rhys Elliott from MIDiA also brings up the Wii U. He says the confusion almost ruined the gains made by the original Wii. The Switch is now the heart of Nintendo's brand, and they can't afford any more confusion.
Joost van Dreunen, author of the Super Joost newsletter, thinks the simple name is a good idea. He says, "Naming the new device Switch 2 is clear and communicates its place in the market. " With Nintendo expanding into movies and theme parks, a clear name is important.
So, even though the Switch 2 name might seem boring, it's the best choice for Nintendo. It's a direct sequel to the original Switch, so a simple name makes sense. Now, let's see what the future holds for the rumored Switch Thrii.
