Being the Archbishop of Canterbury, the top boss of the Church of England. That's exactly what Justin Welby was, but he recently decided to call it quits. Why? Well, it turns out there was a big mess involving a man named John Smyth, who was accused of some truly horrible stuff. Smyth was linked to the Church of England and was said to have abused a lot of people, especially young men and kids. A report from the church said that Smyth's abuse went on for years, and even some church leaders knew about it but didn't do much to stop it. Welby himself admitted that when he found out about the abuse in 2013, he thought the police would handle it. But that didn't happen, and now, he feels responsible for the delay in justice. Welby said he knew about Smyth's concerns, but he wasn't sure how bad the abuse was before 2013. He even worked with Smyth at summer camps in the past. This is a big deal because no Archbishop of Canterbury has ever resigned over child abuse before.
