Why Did This Plane Crash? Looking for Answers
Aktau, KazakhstanSat Dec 28 2024
You’re flying on an Azerbaijan Airlines plane on Christmas Day. Suddenly, a loud bang echoes, and the plane starts acting strangely. Passenger Subhonkul Rakhimov described it as “behaving unnaturally. ” Why did this happen? Early investigations suggest “physical and technical external interference” might be the reason. The plane was on its way to Grozny, Chechnya, but had to change course due to Ukrainian drones and fog, according to Russian officials. However, a US official hinted that a Russian anti-aircraft system could have caused the crash. The plane was eventually diverted to Aktau airport in Kazakhstan.
The crash left many casualties. At least 38 of the 67 people on board died, including crew members. Among the passengers were people from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. The plane’s exterior showed perforations that could be related to shrapnel or debris, but this hasn’t been confirmed. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, accused Russia of trying to cover up the truth, emphasizing the importance of a fair investigation.
Intelligence expert Justin Crump suggested that the plane might have been hit by mistake. Russian air defenses were active near Grozny around the time of the incident. Azerbaijan Airlines has temporarily stopped flights to seven Russian cities for safety reasons and announced compensation for crash victims.
