Revenge, driven by psychological and contextual factors, can lead victims of crime to seek violent justice. But what motivates this desire for revenge? Researchers dived into existing studies to find answers. They looked at databases like PsycInfo and MEDLINE to identify quantitative and meta-analytical studies on this topic. They found 10 reports covering 14 studies that fit their criteria. Interestingly, they discovered four main types of predictors: factors related to the crime itself, mental health issues, interactions with the criminal justice system, and personal traits. For instance, experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was linked to a stronger desire for revenge. On the other hand, participating in restorative justice programs seemed to lessen this desire. However, the study also pointed out that more research is needed, as many factors were only examined once and most studies were cross-sectional.
