Why Do Girls and Boys Experience Depression Differently?
USAThu Jul 10 2025
Depression among teens is a serious concern, and it affects girls more than boys. But why do some young people struggle with these feelings more than others? A recent study explored this question by examining what conditions lead to depressive symptoms in teens.
The study involved 292 girls and 164 boys from a U. S. high school. Researchers looked at negative thinking patterns and stressful events at the beginning of the study. They then checked in a year later to see who had developed symptoms of depression.
The findings were eye-opening. For girls, negative thoughts and stressful events were strong indicators of future depression. However, for boys, none of these factors alone could predict who would become depressed. This suggests that boys and girls may have different risk factors for depression.
Over half of the girls in the study had these risk factors, placing them in a high-risk category. This means that prevention strategies might need to be different for boys and girls.
This research shows how important it is to understand the differences between boys and girls when it comes to depression. It also points to the need for better prevention programs that consider these differences.
