Ever wondered why Half-Life 2: Episode 3 never saw the light of day? A recent documentary from Valve itself dishes out some insightful details. The team had been working on a new ice gun that could freeze enemies, create cover, and even let players slide around like they were on a frosty skating rink. There were also plans for a unique, gooey enemy that could split into smaller parts to squeeze through tight spaces.
The project hit a wall when Valve decided to shift focus to another game, Left 4 Dead. After a few months working on Episode 3, the team had a bunch of playable levels in an icy setting but not much else. They estimated it would take years to finish.
By the time they wanted to return to Episode 3, the project felt outdated. Plus, the technology for those gooey enemies was already being used in Portal 2. One engineer, David Speyrer, said it was like they had missed their chance and needed a new game engine to keep the series going. Looking back, he thought they could have finished Episode 3 in two years.
