Why Human Judgment Matters More Than AI Tools in Professional Services
AI is changing how professional service firms work, but not in the way many expect. Instead of just speeding up tasks, companies are rethinking their whole approach to delivering value to clients. The focus is shifting from fancy tools to trusted results and smart human decisions.
Matt Cook from PwC UK and Prasad Narasimhan Sulur from Certinia recently discussed this shift with Scott Hebner on theCUBE. They explained that winning firms aren't just buying better AI software. They're redesigning how work gets done from the ground up.
Here's the key point: finishing tasks faster doesn't mean finishing projects faster. AI might help write code in minutes instead of days, but testing, integration, and releases still take time. The same goes for consulting work. Research that used to take months can now happen in weeks, but the entire process needs to be rebuilt, not just parts of it.
PwC's Global CEO Survey shows the challenge clearly. Only 12% of CEOs saw both cost cuts and revenue growth from AI. Meanwhile, 56% saw no real financial benefits. This gap exists because most companies treat AI like a magic shortcut instead of changing how they actually work.
The winners will be firms that turn AI into repeatable results, not those with the most tools. This means executives need to set clear direction while employees learn to use AI effectively. Both top-down leadership and bottom-up skills matter equally.
Trust becomes crucial as AI handles more important work. AI suggestions might sound right but still be wrong. Professional service firms need systems that add business context, control who sees what, and check outputs against expected results. Workflow tools and data management help AI understand project stages and past work.
Unstructured data like meeting notes and old project files hold huge value. But firms must figure out what's relevant for each task while keeping sensitive information secure. This balance between access and protection defines the next era of professional services.
