Why Info Matters for Green Business Travel
USAWed Jan 01 2025
Business travelers are big players in the aviation industry's carbon emissions, especially in the U. S. where they account for around 10% of total emissions. While commercial jets are the larger culprit, business travelers using scheduled flights or private jets need greener options. The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) thinks having the right information is key to making this happen.
Mark Cuschieri, GBTA president, and Delphine Millot, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Sustainability, believe data is crucial for short-term gains. Business travelers want to reduce their carbon footprint but often lack accurate info on emissions from their trips. Corporate travel tools and deals with airlines limit their choices.
The GBTA works with companies to evaluate their sustainability metrics and improve compliance. Europe is ahead in sustainability, with stricter regulations and penalties for non-compliance. The U. S. , on the other hand, rewards sustainable practices.
Cuschieri and Millot emphasize that every step counts and that standardizing industry regulations is essential. They also push for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology in the long run. Meanwhile, the GBTA encourages business travelers to ask the right questions before booking to make more environmentally friendly choices.
The GBTA's work is far from over. While they support organizations providing reliable carbon impact info, creating long-term change is tough without regulatory pressure. Until then, they'll keep encouraging sustainable travel policies.
