Why Is Elon Musk Supporting a Controversial Figure?
London, UKFri Jan 03 2025
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has been vocal about his support for British far-right activist Tommy Robinson, who is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence. Musk has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to post and repost content about Robinson, even pinning a "Free Tommy Robinson! " post to the top of his page. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lemmon, founded the anti-Islam English Defence League and has gained a significant following for his divisive anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Robinson's legal troubles stem from a 2018 incident where he made false claims about a Syrian refugee, Jamal Hijazi, in a viral video. A British court found Robinson liable for libel and ordered him to pay £100, 000 in damages. Despite the court order, Robinson continued to repeat his false claims, leading to his fifth prison sentence.
Musk's support for Robinson includes claims that the activist was imprisoned for speaking out against child sexual abuse, although Robinson was actually jailed for contempt of court. Musk has also criticized the UK government and the Labour Party, suggesting that the country is on the brink of "civil war. "
Robinson's activism has gained him support from far-right figures in the US, including Proud Boys leader Enrico Tarrio and Donald Trump Jr. This support could explain why Musk is publicly aligning himself with the controversial figure.
The increasing involvement of Musk in UK politics has raised concerns among Labour Party politicians, who have called for the government to leave X over Musk's comments. There are also calls for new anti-corruption measures to limit political donations from foreign nationals.
Even within the far-right, Robinson is a divisive figure. Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK Party, has sought to distance himself from Robinson. Despite this, Musk's advocacy for Robinson's release could potentially affect his ties with Farage and Reform UK.
Musk has been increasingly involved in politics, both domestically and internationally. He has backed far-right parties in Germany and the US, reflecting a broader trend of far-right populism gaining traction in Europe.
