Some people in the U. S. government think it's time for the country to leave NATO. They say the organization is old and no longer useful. Rep. Thomas Massie from Kentucky introduced a bill to do just that. He believes the U. S. should focus on its own defense instead of paying for other countries. Massie argues that NATO was made to fight the Soviet Union, which doesn't exist anymore. He says the U. S. has spent a lot of money on NATO and gotten involved in wars it shouldn't be in. He also thinks the Founding Fathers would disagree with the U. S. being part of NATO. NATO was created in 1949 with 12 countries. Now, there are 32. According to the rules, a country can leave NATO after 20 years with a one-year notice. Other politicians, like Sen. Mike Lee from Utah, also want the U. S. to leave NATO. They say other countries should pay for their own defense. Some people, like former President Donald Trump, have criticized NATO members for not paying enough. Trump said NATO members agreed to increase their defense spending. But Massie and Trump disagree on other things, like the Epstein case.
