Why Isn't Carbon Capture Tech More Common?
USAMon Oct 07 2024
Did you know that there’s a way to clean up power plant exhaust before it hits the air? It’s called carbon capture and storage, or CCS for short. Here’s how it works: special liquids called amines scrub away CO2 from the exhaust gases. Sounds great, right? Well, not so fast.
Businesses that sell energy might not be too thrilled about this process because it can cost a lot and use up a significant amount of power. In fact, CCS can gobble up to 30% of what a power plant produces! That’s like asking a bakery to give away one in every three loaves of bread for free. You can see why they might not be too keen on that idea.
Another thing is the risk of leaks. Recent problems with CO2 storage wells show that keeping all that captured carbon safe and secure isn’t always easy. It’s like trying to hold a bunch of balloons underwater—one little slip and whoosh, they’re gone!
But here’s the thing: even though CCS has its challenges, people are still working on it. Technology is improving all the time, and more and more folks are looking for ways to use less carbon. Who knows? One day, CCS might just become the norm. But for now, there are still some big hurdles to overcome.
