Ivermectin, a drug usually used to fight parasites, has been in the spotlight as a possible treatment for COVID-19. Two studies recently looked at similar data from clinical trials, but had different views. One said the drug could help reduce COVID-19 deaths, while the other wasn't so sure. This new paper takes a different approach, using something called Bayesian analysis on a subset of the trial data. This method checks several ways ivermectin might affect how serious COVID-19 gets and how that relates to death rates.
The results? There's a high chance that ivermectin helps, especially for more severe cases. But, they also checked how solid these findings are by removing one study at a time. Even when they took out the study that raised eyebrows, the results stayed strong. This paper also explains why this Bayesian method might be better than the usual statistical methods. All the studies looked at were before the delta variant became a big deal.
