Why Latin America’s crime problem is fueling a political shift
Bogota, ColombiaThu Jun 18 2026
Over the last few years, violent crime has become a defining issue in Latin America. While overall homicide rates have dropped slightly across the region, pockets of extreme violence—especially in cocaine-producing nations like Colombia and Peru—have kept fear high. Extortion cases have skyrocketed in places like Ecuador and Peru, where gangs now control entire neighborhoods. This chaos has given conservative populists a powerful campaign tool: promises of brutal crackdowns and quick fixes.
Many voters, tired of slow-moving governments and weak institutions, are turning to leaders who mimic El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. His aggressive anti-crime tactics—like mass arrests and overcrowded prisons—have won him global praise from figures like Donald Trump. Candidates from Chile to Honduras now copy his playbook, blaming migrants and pushing for military-style policing. But critics warn these methods could backfire, eroding democracy and leading to human rights violations.
The left once dominated the region’s politics, promising social reforms to fight crime at its roots. But their solutions—better policing, job programs—take time. Voters want results now, and populists deliver instant reassurance, even if it means sacrificing freedoms. Chile’s recent election, for example, saw a hardline conservative win after crime fears tied to Venezuelan migrants surged. Peru’s Keiko Fujimori, daughter of a former authoritarian leader, is now pushing similar tough-on-crime policies.
Yet reality is complicating these promises. Ecuador’s president scrapped plans for floating prisons after taking office, and Chile’s new leader has struggled to meet deportation targets. Meanwhile, crime rates in some areas keep climbing. Experts say this gap between campaign rhetoric and governing reality could soon test voters’ patience.
