Why many women in India are choosing to become mothers later in life
IndiaTue Apr 07 2026
Many women in India are having their first or last child later than before. This trend is happening across cities and towns. More women are finishing school, working jobs, and living in urban areas. These changes give women more control over their lives but also bring new health challenges.
Doctors now know that waiting longer to have a baby can increase certain risks. Women over 35 are more likely to face issues during pregnancy. These can include high blood pressure, diabetes, or complications during delivery. While these risks are well-studied in rich countries, there isn’t enough data yet from large studies in India.
Researchers looked at women aged 40 to 49 to understand delayed motherhood. These women had likely finished having children, making it a good group to study. The findings show that waiting too long can affect both mother and baby. Yet, many Indian women are still choosing to delay pregnancy for different reasons.
Education and career goals play a big part. Women today want to build stable lives before starting a family. Financial security and personal growth often take priority. But with delayed motherhood comes higher medical risks that need to be managed carefully.
