Why No Hate Crime Charge in Chicago Shooting?
Chicago, IL, USA,Wed Oct 30 2024
In Chicago, a man named Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, just 22 years old, has found himself in serious trouble. He's been charged with 14 felonies after allegedly shooting a Jewish man who was on his way to a local synagogue. The victim, 39, was shot multiple times and treated at a local hospital. The incident happened on Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath, in the city's Rogers Park district. The man was wearing a kippah, a Jewish skullcap, when he was shot without any words being exchanged.
The suspect also opened fire on first responders before being apprehended. He was shot by police and is currently being treated in a hospital. The police have scheduled a detention hearing for Tuesday.
The community leaders are questioning why hate crime charges haven't been filed. Ald. Debra Silverstein, who attends the same synagogue as the victim, expressed increased fear among local Jews. She said in a message to her constituents that she was "very disappointed" that hate crime charges hadn't been filed, despite evidence suggesting an antisemitic motive.
Rabbi Shlomo Soroka from Agudath Israel of Illinois said that whether or not there is a hate crime charge, it doesn't change the reality of their experience. The police superintendent, Larry Snelling, acknowledged the rising tensions in the area and the presence of hate paraphernalia.
The FBI is aware of the shooting and is working with local, state, and federal law enforcement to help the community. Attacks on Jews in the U. S. have tripled since attacks on Israel in October 2021. Sadly, this year marks six years since the tragic shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, where 11 people lost their lives.
