Why People Are Leaving Massachusetts
Massachusetts, USAWed Jan 08 2025
Ever wondered why some states see more people moving in, while others see more people moving out? Well, Massachusetts is one of those states where folks seem to be packing their bags. Two moving services, U-Haul and United Van Lines, recently reported that more people are leaving the Bay State than arriving.
U-Haul's Growth Index ranked Massachusetts as the second-lowest state in growth for the second year running. They found that 52 percent of one-way U-Haul rentals in Massachusetts were for people heading out, while only 48 percent were for people coming in. On the flip side, South Carolina was the top destination, with 51. 7 percent of one-way rentals arriving there.
United Van Lines also put Massachusetts on their "high outbound" list for 2024. They reported that nearly 58 percent of the moves they handled involved people leaving the state.
So, why are so many people leaving Massachusetts? Could it be the high cost of living, the weather, or maybe something else? It's something to think about.
