In British Columbia, a long drought has led to year-round wildfires and water rationing in some areas. But there’s a glimmer of hope: experts say there's a 71% chance that La Nina, a weather pattern known for bringing cooler temperatures and more rain, will hit the region this winter. This could mean an end to the drought that has been troubling British Columbia for years.
Professor Sean Fleming from UBC’s atmospheric sciences department thinks this La Nina event might cause "more flooding than usual. " While that might sound bad, it's actually a good thing. More water means more snowpack and better power generation. But there’s a catch: with extra rain comes the risk of storms causing power outages.
BC Hydro wants everyone to be ready for potential blackouts, especially in areas where trees are weak due to the long drought. They suggest creating an emergency kit with non-perishable items and having a flashlight handy. You can even find an outage checklist on their website to help you prepare.
