Why redheads are getting more common over time

Red hair might seem rare, but its genes are actually becoming stronger than ever. A huge study from Harvard looked at DNA from over 16, 000 people who lived across Europe and parts of the Middle East over the last 18, 000 years. The research team spent seven years gathering and comparing this genetic data, making it one of the largest studies of its kind. The results challenge what scientists used to believe about human evolution. For a long time, experts thought natural selection mostly stopped once humans started farming, building cities, and using medicine. The idea was that survival pressures eased when life got more stable. But this new data shows that evolution kept changing us in unexpected ways. Instead of slowing down, natural selection found new targets—like red hair, lighter skin, and even disease resistance.
The study found that genes for traits like fair skin, lower chances of diseases like leprosy and HIV, and even a reduced risk of alcoholism became more common. Some surprises popped up too—genes for celiac disease and Crohn’s disease also increased, possibly because wheat farming spread widely. The researchers admit this trade-off is puzzling. Scientists used to think directional selection—where one trait gets consistently favored—wasn’t very common in humans. This study found hundreds of cases, far more than the 20 known before. That means evolution didn’t just tinker with genes; it pushed certain ones forward repeatedly. Red hair might have been one of those traits, either because it helped survival or just tagged along with something more important. The next step for the research team is to explore East Asia and East Africa for similar genetic patterns. Their work could one day help with disease prevention by showing how our biology changed over time. For now, redheads can take pride knowing their hair color is part of an ongoing evolutionary story.
