Why Samsung Phones Don't Have Bigger Batteries
USAThu Jul 03 2025
Samsung hasn't boosted the battery size of its Ultra phones in over half a decade. While Chinese brands are packing phones with massive batteries, Samsung sticks to around 5, 000mAh. Why? It's not just about tech; it's about rules.
The U. S. has strict rules on lithium-ion batteries. These rules limit phone batteries to 20Wh. Most Samsung phones have batteries just under this limit. A 5, 000mAh battery in a Galaxy phone usually has a voltage of 3. 88V, which equals about 19. 4Wh. Other brands like Apple, Google, and Sony also follow this limit. OnePlus is an exception, using a dual-cell design to stay within the rules.
Samsung faces even more challenges in Europe. The EU has its own set of regulations. Since Samsung sells phones worldwide, it must follow all these rules. This makes it hard for Samsung to use bigger batteries.
Chinese brands like Huawei and OPPO don't sell many phones in the U. S. or Europe. So, they can use bigger batteries in their home market. But Samsung must consider all markets. So, next time you wonder why Samsung doesn't have a bigger battery, think about the rules they must follow.
