James Cameron has never been a fan of the Oscars. He thinks the Academy Awards often overlook science-fiction movies. In a chat with a film writer, Cameron said he doesn't make movies to win Oscars. He focuses on creating films that people enjoy watching.
Cameron pointed out that the Oscars rarely honor sci-fi films. He mentioned Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies as examples. Villeneuve directed both "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two. " But the Academy didn't nominate him for best director for either film.
Cameron said, "Denis Villeneuve made these two magnificent 'Dune' films and apparently these films make themselves because he wasn't considered as a director, not even by the Director’s Guild. " He added, "You can play the awards game or you can play the game I like to play and that’s to make movies people actually go to. "
Cameron knows a thing or two about the Oscars. His movie "Titanic" won 11 Oscars. It's tied for the most wins ever. But even Cameron thinks the Oscars have a bias against sci-fi.
Josh Brolin, who acted in "Dune: Part Two, " also spoke up. He told Oscar voters not to snub Villeneuve again. After Villeneuve wasn't nominated, Brolin joked he might quit acting. He said, "If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting. "
The Oscars have a history of ignoring sci-fi. This makes many people wonder if the awards are fair. Maybe it's time for the Academy to give sci-fi films the recognition they deserve.
