Feeling extra sleepy during the day or not eager to do things due to poor sleep habits? Seniors, take note! A new study found that these issues might increase the risk of a condition called motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR). This syndrome can lead to dementia later in life. Researchers think that fixing sleep problems early could help prevent cognitive decline.
MCR affects quite a few people worldwide, with estimates ranging from 2% to 27%. The study involved 445 older adults who shared info about their sleep and walked on a treadmill annually for about three years. They found that those with sleep troubles were more likely to develop MCR. The study doesn't prove that sleep issues cause MCR, but it shows a connection. More research is needed to understand the relationship and how sleep disturbances might link to MCR and cognitive decline.
