Why the Electoral College Isn’t Fair Anymore
Washington DC, USATue Nov 05 2024
The Electoral College is a weird system that doesn't make sense today. It was set up a long time ago to balance power between big and small states. But now, it makes some votes matter more than others. For example, a vote in a small state like Wyoming counts more than a vote in a big state like California. This is not fair because every vote should count the same.
The system also makes it so that candidates only care about a few states, called swing states, and ignore the rest. This means voters in big cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago don't get much attention from candidates. In other democracies, candidates try to win votes from everywhere.
Many people want to change this system, but it's hard because it's in the Constitution. One way to fix it is through something called the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. This would make the person who gets the most votes nationwide the winner, no matter what the Electoral College says. But some states don't want this because they like having more power.
This whole situation is making people upset and angry. It's not a good way to run an election in a democracy. It's like a joke to other countries, and it's not fair to voters. We need to find a better way to choose our leaders.
