Do you ever wonder why we are drawn to dark themes in art? Why is it easier to stare at a painting of a sad moment in history then to look at a photograph of the same moment. Art has a special way of making us want to explore difficult topics. It's funny how often art and pessimism go together. People seem to have a preference for engaging with negative themes when they are presented in an artistic manner, rather than in a straightforward, nonartistic fashion. This concept has been talked about a lot, but there hasn’t been much scientific research to back it up. 5 studies were conducted that included over a thousand people. These studies found that people chose to engage more with negative art than with photographs of similar content. This means that we don't avoid the Darker side of art asmuch as we might think we do. People didn't just choose it, they also spent more time with these negative art pieces versus the negative photos. But the question remains - why?
The answer lies in what happens in our minds when we engage with negative content through art and nonart. Art seems to evoke a higher level of aesthetic appreciation, whereas nonart provides a more realistic perspective. People were more moved by art yet they were still moved by the photos when it came to negative content the majority of time. There are hidden drivers behind this preference for art. People are drawn to it because they expect to appreciate its beauty, gain new insights, or see things from a different perspective. So why do we keep coming back to looking at all the same photos, art and art galleriesand nonart galleries. These motivations encourage us to engage with both art and nonart, but we are also deterred by the emotional costs, especially when dealing with nonart. So it's like art creates a buffer, a safe space for us to explore and interact with negative content without feeling too overwhelmed. This is what we call aesthetic distance. This is where art, being an abstraction of reality, allows us to dive into negative themes with fewer emotional costs and the prospect of aesthetic rewards.
