Why We Need to Slash Emissions Now: UN's Urgent Call

Fri Oct 25 2024
Our world getting warmer by at least 2. 6 degrees Celsius this century. That’s what could happen if countries don’t step up their game on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This grim outlook comes from a recent report by the United Nations Environment Program. The report paints a picture where natural disasters become even more frequent and dangerous. Next year, countries will submit their plans to reduce emissions, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). These plans aim to limit global temperature increases to either 1. 5 or 2 degrees Celsius, as agreed in the Paris Agreement. But to meet the 1. 5-degree goal, much bigger cuts are needed. The report suggests using more solar and wind power, which could cut emissions by around 38% by 2035. Also, protecting forests could bring down emissions by about 20%. Every small step makes a big difference, saving lives and protecting the ecosystem. To achieve these goals, countries need to work together. The world’s biggest emitters, especially G20 nations, have to do the heavy lifting. This means making strong commitments and providing financial support.
