Cancer rates are changing in the US. Women under 50 are now 82% more likely to get cancer than men, according to a new report. This shift is partly due to increases in breast and thyroid cancers, which affect women more. Young men, on the other hand, are seeing fewer diagnoses for cancers like melanoma and prostate cancer. Lifestyle factors like alcohol consumption and pregnancy play a role. For instance, women in the US are having children later, missing out on protective benefits. Also, heavy drinking among women is on the rise. Lung cancer is another area where women are now leading in new cases among younger age groups.
Smoking rates among women have dropped, but not as much as men's. Cervical cancer is also increasing among women aged 30 to 44, possibly due to vaccine hesitancy and delayed screenings. Obesity is another factor, with women and younger generations more likely to be overweight. Lifestyle changes can reduce cancer risk, as about half of all cancers are linked to behavior. Better screening and imaging technology are also detecting more early-stage cancers. While overall survival rates are improving, some cancer death rates are rising.
