Wind and dry conditions are fueling wildfires across the Northeast, with 27 million people from New York to Massachusetts under fire alerts. Cities like New York and Boston are feeling the heat, with wind gusts up to 35 mph and humidity as low as 25%. Vegetation is super dry, with the region about 6 to 8 inches behind on rain since September 1. A cold front is expected to bring some rain on Sunday.
In Brooklyn's Prospect Park, a brush fire burned overnight, scorching about 2 acres. The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) worked hard to put it out. They mentioned that this is one of over 100 brush fires in the city this month alone.
Pennsylvania's Berks County is also dealing with a fire. It started late Friday night, causing nearby residents to evacuate to a school. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will lead the firefighting efforts.
In New Jersey, the Cannonball 3 Wildfire is still burning in Passaic County, with no containment yet. It's threatening 55 structures. Another wildfire in Bergen County is 40% contained, but a new one, the Jennings Creed Wildfire, has already impacted 1, 800 acres and is threatening 10 structures.
Northern New Jersey is under a red flag warning, which means extreme fire behavior is possible. These wildfires are causing air quality concerns, especially in the New York City area.
On the West Coast, the Mountain Fire in Ventura County, California, has spread over 20, 600 acres and is 17% contained. The cause is under investigation. Sunny and dry conditions are expected, with wind gusts up to 20 mph, and air quality alerts are in effect due to wildfire smoke.
