Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz faced a tough challenge in parliament on Monday. He needed the support of at least 367 lawmakers to win a confidence vote, but he only got 207. That's because his government fell apart a few weeks ago over a big argument about the economy. Now, the president has to decide if there should be an early election on February 23, seven months earlier than planned. Scholz said he wants to invest more in the future, raise the minimum wage, and cut taxes on food.
His main opponent, Friedrich Merz, thinks Scholz is making Germany's economy weaker and spending too much money. Germany is also helping Ukraine in its war with Russia, but they disagree on how much help to give. Polls show that Merz's party is more popular right now, but no party is likely to win enough votes on its own. That means there could be a lot of talks to form a new government after the election. Confidence votes don't happen often in Germany, and the last one was in 2005.
