Will Today's Kids Hit 100?
USAMon Oct 07 2024
Scientists have been looking into how long kids born today will live. The news isn't as rosy as we might hope. Girls have a 5% chance of hitting 100, while boys only have a 2% shot. Gerontologist Jay Olshansky explains why these odds are lower than we think. He also tells us why dreaming of living to 120 might be too much.
Back in the 1990s, Olshansky predicted that kids wouldn't live to 100 in big numbers. Now, 34 years later, his study across 10 countries shows he was right on the money. We're still getting older, but the speed at which our lives are lengthening is slowing down.
Ever wondered why this is happening? Aging is like a supervillain we can't beat yet. It's the main reason we're hitting this wall. Plus, obesity and diseases like diabetes are making things worse.
You might have heard about animals living super long lives thanks to science. That's true, but it's not clear if the same tricks will work for us humans. Olshansky says we should focus on health span, not just lifespan. In other words, it's better to live a long, healthy life than a long, sick one.
So, while the news isn't all sunshine and rainbows, there's still hope. Scientists are working hard to figure out how to make aging slow down. Until then, let's make the most of the extra years we've got!
