Wind Whispers: Fort Collins Braces for a Blustery Day

Northern Colorado is in for a wild ride. The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings and watches, signaling that December 9 will be a day of powerful gusts. These winds aren't just a nuisance; they can cause serious problems. Power outages and travel troubles are likely, and any new fires could spread like wildfire. The worst of the wind is expected in the foothills and western areas, where gusts could hit an incredible 90 mph. But Fort Collins won't be spared, with gusts up to 75 mph possible. The National Weather Service has shared some details about what to expect. In the foothills and mountains, west winds will blow between 35 to 50 mph, with gusts reaching 80 to 90 mph. This will happen from midnight on December 8 to midnight on December 9. The strongest winds will be north of I-70 and east of the Continental Divide. These winds can cause damage, blowing down trees and power lines, leading to power outages. Travel will be tough, especially for larger vehicles. Fort Collins, Boulder, and nearby areas can expect west winds between 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph. This will happen throughout December 9. The strongest winds will be near the base of the foothills, including the Highway 93 corridor near Boulder, and along the Cheyenne Ridge. Similar to the foothills, these winds can cause damage and make travel difficult. Plus, any new fires could spread rapidly, especially in areas with little to no snow cover. Despite the wind, temperatures will be mild. Fort Collins can expect highs around 57 degrees, while Estes Park will see highs around 47 degrees. Skies should be sunny. Lows will be around 32 degrees in Fort Collins and 33 degrees in Estes Park. While the wind warnings and watches are only in effect for December 9, the wind won't completely die down the following days. December 10 and 11 will still be windy or breezy.
