The technology, developed in collaboration with glassmaker AGC and mobile carrier NTT Docomo, is the result of years of research and experimentation. The team used a transparent conductive material, placed between two sheets of glass and a transparent resin, to create a design reminiscent of laminated windshields. This unique material protects the conductive elements, increasing the durability of the antenna and reducing the likelihood of damage from external factors.

The transparent 5G base station can be easily installed on the interior surface of regular windows, with only the required cabling visible. The cables can be hidden away at the top or bottom edges of the window, making it a discreet and practical solution for urban areas.
The technology is compatible with Sub6 5G frequency, which allows the 5G signal to penetrate walls and buildings, making it an ideal solution for extending coverage in densely populated areas. While the bandwidth and speeds may not be comparable to mmWave 5G, the Waveantenna can still improve 5G access in areas where it is most needed.
In addition to its advantages in building design, the technology also offers carriers the option to choose the appropriate installation height, which is more difficult for regular base stations. This flexibility can be particularly useful in areas with complex infrastructure or limited space.
As the technology continues to evolve, it's exciting to think about the potential applications beyond buildings. AGC is already exploring the possibility of applying 5G glass antennas to cars, which could revolutionize the way we connect on the road.
