Windows 11 Revives Android Gaming with Tencent's Help

ChinaSun Nov 17 2024
When Microsoft first introduced Windows 11, one of its standout features was the ability to run Android apps. Unfortunately, this dream didn't quite take off, and the feature stayed in a public preview stage with only a few software options available. However, Tencent has stepped in to bring this functionality back to life for beta testers in China. Now, Windows Insiders in China can download Android apps directly from Tencent's App Store. This is a significant turnaround, considering Microsoft had to shelve its original plans to make this feature available worldwide. With the latest Insider update, users can spot Tencent's MyApp logo on the left side of the Microsoft Store window. Clicking it opens up a library filled with popular games like PUBG Mobile, Honor of Kings, and many more. Tencent aims to make around 1, 500 apps compatible with Windows, which will also be searchable through Bing and Windows Search. The company hopes this will help Android developers reach a wider audience. Microsoft and Tencent announced their partnership back in May, but it's still unclear when this selection will be available to all Windows users in China, let alone globally. Microsoft had initially planned to support Android apps worldwide and introduced a public preview in 2022. However, the full launch was canceled, and the preview is set to end on March 5, 2025. After that, users won't be able to download new apps or run previously installed ones. The limited app selection likely turned off many users. Instead of connecting to the Google Play Store, which is the largest distributor of Android apps, the preview linked users to Amazon's app store, which requires an Amazon account and has far fewer apps. Despite this setback, Microsoft hasn't given up on improving the connection between Android devices and Windows 11. They've added features like file transfers between devices and using an Android phone as a webcam. This is likely an attempt to mimic the deep integration between iPhones and macOS devices, which includes cross-compatible apps, webcam functionality, and easy file transfers. Apple even introduced iPhone screen mirroring this year, allowing full control within macOS without unlocking the phone. It's uncertain whether Android phones will ever achieve this level of integration with Windows PCs.
