Winter Arrives Early: B. C. Border Expects Heavy Snowfall
British ColumbiaYukon, CanadaFri Oct 18 2024
Are you ready for an early taste of winter? Environment Canada has just issued the first snowfall warnings of the season along the British Columbia and Yukon border. Residents and travelers in the affected areas can expect a significant dump of snow.
The weather office predicts that the snow will start falling today and continue until Saturday. Most regions should see around 10 centimetres of snow, but some places like Swift River could get up to 25 centimetres!
The good news is that the snow will clear out by Sunday, thanks to an arctic ridge of high pressure. Temperatures are expected to drop to a chilly -20 degrees Celsius by Monday.
This isn't the only place expecting snow. Areas south of the border in Fort Nelson, B. C. , will also see their first substantial snowfall starting Friday. Most regions should get about 10 centimetres, but areas close to the border could see even more.
Drivers need to be extra careful on Friday night due to low visibility from drifting snow. There's also a wind warning for exposed coastal sections of North Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii, and North and Central Coasts. Gusts up to 110 km/hour are forecasted for Friday.
Meanwhile, southern B. C. might see some wet snow on Friday afternoon before it turns to rain. An atmospheric river is moving in, bringing milder air along with it.
So, bundle up and stay safe out there! Winter is coming early this year.
