Winter Storm Hits DC: Snow and Freezing Temperatures Ahead
DC Metro Area, USAMon Jan 06 2025
A major snowstorm is on its way to the DC region, bringing heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning effective from 10 p. m. Sunday until 1 a. m. Tuesday. Meteorologists predict snow accumulation between 6 to 12 inches. The main part of the storm is expected to hit in the evening, with additional snow possible in the afternoon. This could be the largest snow event since 2019.
Officials are concerned about travel conditions, as roads may become impassable. Schools and government offices have announced closures and delays. The DC Mayor has declared a snow emergency, allowing cars parked on emergency routes to be towed. Maryland and Virginia Governors have also declared states of emergency.
Traffic is expected to be difficult, especially on bridges and overpasses. Metrobus and rail services have been reduced. Officials advise staying off the roads if possible. If you must travel, drive slowly and carry a winter storm kit. The storm will bring chilling winds, with highs remaining in the 20s through the week.
