Are you eager to see something incredible in the night sky? Look no further than the Quadrantid meteor shower, the first of its kind in 2025! This cosmic show will be at its peak on Friday, and the best part? The moon will be a waning crescent, which means clear and dark conditions for optimal viewing. Unlike other meteor showers named after their constellation origins, the Quadrantids have a unique history. They're named after a constellation that no longer exists, says NASA’s William Cooke.
These meteors might not have long trails, but they can leave bright fireballs as their trademark. At their peak, you might spot up to 120 meteors in an hour! The viewing window stretches all the way until January 16. So, if you miss it on Friday, you still have a few more days to catch a glimpse.
But what exactly is a meteor shower? Well, as Earth orbits the sun, it passes through debris from comets and sometimes asteroids. The Quadrantids, for instance, come from an asteroid called 2003 EH1. When this space debris enters our atmosphere, it heats up due to the resistance from the air, creating the beautiful meteor showers we love.
To watch a meteor shower, you don’t need any fancy equipment. Just find a spot away from city lights. The best time to watch is in the early predawn hours when the moon is low. Avoid bright lights and distractions, like your phone, to spot more shooting stars.
The Quadrantids will be at their peak on a night with a slim crescent moon, which is only 11% full. If you miss this one, don’t worry—the next meteor shower, the Lyrids, will peak in mid-April.
