Women find strength in sharing mental health struggles together
University of Florida, Gainesville, USAMon Mar 23 2026
More than a third of female college students today face anxiety, research shows. At the University of Florida, one student noticed something missing. While therapy helped her, she wanted something more personal—a space where women could talk openly without scheduling conflicts or mixed groups.
So in late 2025, she and four others launched a student-led support network called the Women’s Mental Health Alliance. The group runs free sessions every two weeks on topics like depression, eating disorders, and toxic relationships. Each session has a leader who’s been through similar challenges, making the space feel less like advice and more like friendship.
Why women-only? Studies suggest female students face pressures unique to their experiences—like discrimination or body image concerns—that aren’t always understood by men. In these meetings, topics like menstruation or workplace bias come up naturally. For some, it’s the first time they feel truly heard.
Experts agree peer groups complement therapy. They build confidence, reduce isolation, and help women practice coping skills in real time. Unlike professional sessions, these groups focus on shared understanding rather than clinical solutions. Many members say they finally feel less alone.
Not everyone agrees with the concept. Some campus protests have made certain spaces feel unwelcoming. For students who’ve faced judgment, a women-only group offers safety. Craft nights and hikes add a social twist, blending support with fun. One member described walking into a room full of understanding faces as “life-changing. ”
The club also fosters leadership. Members help run sessions, plan events, and lift each other up. For the founders, it’s about more than coping—it’s about building a community where no woman has to fight her battles silently.
